Framebook

See the frame before the photo.

A good photograph begins with attention. Use the camera you have and explore how light, distance and framing change a scene.

Light. Shape. A moment.

Three ways to see differently

Follow the light

Look for soft window light or open shade. Move around your subject and notice how the direction of light changes its shape.

Simplify the edges

Check the corners of the frame before you take the picture. A small step to one side can remove a distracting sign or branch.

Change your distance

Try a wide view, a medium view and a close detail. These three photographs can tell a fuller story of the same place.

A few useful notes

Give the subject some space

Leave room in the direction a person is looking or moving. Then try the opposite and compare how the photographs feel.

Use a simple daily exercise

Photograph the same object in three different kinds of light. Keep the subject unchanged so the light becomes easier to understand.

Choose your favourites slowly

Look again the next day. Keep the images that communicate something clearly, rather than only the ones that are technically neat.

Before changing the camera, change where you stand.
